NICOLA SCOTT NAMED AS 2022 RECIPIENT OF THE ADAM LEE MEMORIAL AWARD

SYDNEY: NICOLA SCOTT has been selected to receive The 2022 ADAM LEE MEMORIAL AWARD at this year’s Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival. The renowned comic-book artist will be presented with the honour as part of the Opening Night of this year’s festival on August 25 at the EVENT Cinemas George Street complex. The presentation will be followed by the Australian Premiere screening of Kirsten Carthew’s Polaris.

The honour is presented to a figure in the science fiction/fantasy community who has exhibited a dedication to their life’s work and served the genre and its fanbase with passion and positivity. It is named in honour of Adam Lee, a Melbourne film archivist, genre fan and, most importantly, a dedicated family man who passed away suddenly in July 2021.

The Sydney-based illustrator has garnered international acclaim for her contribution to the DC Comics universe. She has crafted iconic incarnations of Superman and Batman and on team titles such as Birds Of Prey, Secret Six, Teen Titans and the New York Times bestseller, Earth 2. In 2016, Scott released her critically lauded Black Magick maxi-series, published through Image Comics.

It is her work in service of DC’s blockbuster property Wonder Woman for which she is most adored by fans. In 2016, she produced Wonder Woman: Year One as part of the character’s 75th anniversary celebrations, in collaboration with writer Greg Rucka. Through her partnership with DC, Scott worked with The United Nations to create the key art for Wonder Woman’s ‘Honorary Ambassadorship For Women and Girls’.

“Nicola’s work is marvellous, as iconic in the field of comic book artistry and storytelling as the international sector has ever seen,” says Festival Director Simon Foster. “But it is also her commitment to ensuring the virtues of the characters she draws impact the real world and influence her legion of fans that made her the appropriate recipient of this year’s Adam Lee honour.”
